Daughter of silversmith,
she was brought up deep in the smithing areas of Helms Deep rarely
seeing the light of day. Her youthful clumsiness proved to her father
only that she was a lazy girl and could not learn the fine art of
silver-smithing, he often locked her in a cupboard as punishment and
from this her eyesight deteriorated rapidly as the family were quite
wealthy and the glare of continual light once the cupboard was
reopened impaired her eyesight. Eventually she escaped her parents
clutches and made her way outside of the dwarven city, hiring on as a
night guard with caravans. After a long career traveling Cantabria
she found her way into Makhan’s employ often being the night
captain whilst Guntha Haig in command during the day time hours. Her
poor perception has been offset by her experience and wisdom, a calm
leader who relies on others for information that she is quick to
assimilate. Time has not healed the wounds any and she has never
returned to her parents, despite disproving her father’s
impatient assessment many times with her diligence and attention to
detail.

Daughter
of a Sergeant in Helms Deep army/Mercenary unit, Gimlis traveled with
her fathers band of mercenaries in the mountains and further south in
Cantabria, during her youth she often helped out with the animals of
the caravans which they were guarding and came to know their ways
well. It was during these times that she was befriended by Thoin, an
old dwarf who was still a member of the group though past his best as
a warrior had trained in the ways of nature. It was he who taught her
the plants and animals of the mountains and caves, teaching her how
to apply salves for their best effect and how to track in the
mountains. When she reached adulthood she decided to strike out on
her own and hearing of Makhan's group in the south decided that this
was the perfect opportunity, she went with her father's blessing, who
hoped that one day she would return, an honoured daughter.

Son of a captain in dwarven army,
disliked by parents, especially after not joining regiment. During
basic training in his father’s regiment, his natural talent
with axes showed through. However, the officers mistook this for
showing off and assigned him to the regimental weapon-smiths, to
teach him a lesson. After such treatment during training he did not
fully join the regiment, although it earned him his family’s
enmity, and left to find fortune elsewhere. Early in his mercenary
career he cut the head off an attacking wolf in one mighty blow
(promptly slicing up the rest to make a rather tasty wolf stew). This
earned him the nickname “wolf-head” amongst his comrades,
a name he rather likes and perpetuates by wearing a wolf’s head
skin (sadly not the original) atop his helm.

Son of blacksmith, family
pleased by military decision, but not especially close. They had
hoped he would do well and arranged extra training in weaponsmithing
and armouring for young Bifkli. For his part, he preferred getting on
with his work instead of having to deal with people. But he never
properly showed his gratitude and was not permanently taken on by any
of his trainers. When he managed to sign up with a reputable
mercenary band, his parents were glad they had done their duty by
him. He would love to earn his fortune and repay them but has never
said so.

Hated by family, Son of
blacksmith from village in mountains outside Helms deep. Dobin failed
to notice some sparks from the forge that had lit some nearby hay and
half of the forge burnt down. As he was on his own at the time and
was practicing with his whip he wasn’t exactly paying
attention. Dobin promptly left home under a cloud and went into human
lands to find Dori, his friend and cousin on his father’s side.
They had become firm friends, from the days when their grandfather
took both the dwarf-lads on fishing trips in their youth. They still
compete against each other at fishing, and Dobin usually wins due to
his excellent cast, though this is small consolation for being
ostracized by the rest of his family.

Son of
dwarven linguist, speaks common and elvish, as with the other
linguists in the unit he was sent away by his family to learn more
languages. After the outbreak of the plague he found that dwarves
were distrusted far more and ended up in Makhan’s unit. He
would like to return home at some point but is content with his life
at the moment. He stays for the sake of Dobin, his childhood friend
and cousin on his mother’s side, whom he thinks has been
harshly treated by his family. They often go fishing together and pit
their different styles against each other, recalling happier times.

Son of journeyman
apothecary, popular with family, Bomzor was not sure about the family
business and yearned for more action. As the third son he did not
gain much by learning the family secrets and certainly when the
opportunity arose he leapt at the chance of becoming a soldier,
realizing that, despite his skill he would not inherit much of the
business. He enjoys the outdoor life and is the troop healer, going
in search of plants for his potions. When this involves climbing, he
is sometimes accompanied by Dador and/or Sgt. Balkri, but more often
by Gloris.

subjected to embittered her and she did not wish to bring the pain
onto her parents. She has taken to wearing a closed helm, hence her
nickname.

as he was old enough he had to become part of a fighting unit of
mercenaries in Cantabria. He learnt little however, as they found he

being assigned to mining/stores duties and eventually ran away.
Having met Captain Haig on a combined mission, and being keen to
learn, he realized he would be much better off with Makhan’s
Mercenaries.

linguist, speaks common, orcish, goblin, popular with family. Another
son of a linguist. Dwarven linguists are often intermediaries in
trade negotiations. Dwarven traders often deal with ale, and the
barrels used to contain it. Dain, with instinctive understanding of
their construction, found himself noticing good and bad features of
the barrels he saw so frequently, and sometimes remarked upon it.
Astute traders, who could not notice the differences in quality that
he did, came to rely upon his expertise and profited as a result. It
was not long before barrel-makers, wondering how Dain could always
guide traders to their best stock, put him to the test in their
workshops. They were astounded at his skill and one taught him basic
carpentry (prof), thinking to take him on as an apprentice (though,
in truth, the master may have learnt the most). This idea did not fit
his family’s plan for developing his language skills so Dain,
now nicknamed "Cooper", was sent into the wide world to
learn more.

leave by his family he speaks common well but never mastered elven.
He is friendly with the other linguists and they tend to stay
together during carousing and other opportunities. He usually manages
cunningly to beat the others at dice, and has thus earned the
nickname “Foxy”. A second cousin of Makhan, he sought out
the mercenary troop and joined up when his gambling habits became
frowned upon by his close family. He did so during the years when
Makhan was ‘indisposed’ due to an unfortunate incident
with a gorgon – and without his cousin’s approval.
However, he hopes to sharing in the wealth as he knows Makhan has
sent home a small fortune.

Son
of journeyman gemsmith, fled after stealing from factory. Is actually
wanted in Helms Deep for theft and is an outcast from his clan,
though this has not been made public. Guntha knows, but Makhan
doesn't. He got into Gambling (Gaming prof.) but lost to sharps that
cheated him and coerced him into stealing to pay his 'debts'. Having
no thieving inclination he was found out and went on the run
(perforce developing Hide & Move Silently Profs). Eventually
escaping south, he confessed to Guntha who has offered him a second
chance. Determined not to waste it, he is now even more highly moral
and self-disciplined than most, keen to root out evils similar to
which he fell prey. (Promoted to Sergeant of 3rd Octury).

to redeem himself. Since then Glozin has sought training in how to
defend himself in such situations, and the combat training offered by
Makhan was instrumental in his decision to join the mercenaries.

Son of a Tanner, disliked by family.
Being a tanners son means that one is always stained and smelly, the
tanning process tends to leave its mark on anyone involved.
Unfortunately Odri was not only scarred physically when young (he was
dipped into a vat briefly by his older brother and father for a joke,
saying he “knew the trade inside-out”) he also ended with
a scarred personality. He detests bathing and is normally strong
enough to fight anyone who attempts to force him into such an
unnatural habit. He smells, he’s ugly and he’s obnoxious,
his only saving grace is that he follows orders well and were it not
for his lack of personality would make a good NCO. He cultivates his
personal odour as he believes it masks and is preferable to the stink
of tanning – and he may be right, though his comrades do not
appreciate his efforts.

Two Skills Master “City Builder”
Miner/House Construction , disliked by family, City builder Fili, or
Fooli as his family often named him exasperated his family for his
lack of common sense. If he needs to make a decision independently,
it is often the wrong one, at that moment in time he would fell that
it was the right decision, but can never quite remember why. His
family eventually suggested that he travel and learning of Faradin’s
hold decided that this was the best and farthest position available
for him. A place where he could do no further damage to his clans
reputation. The sad thing is that he is skilled at building houses
and mining, the problem being that he never mined in the correct
direction and his houses were always rather eclectic, individualized
and in many ways, non-dwarven.

Bofri entered the clergy when he
showed little flair for the family trade as a sculptor. His parents
were disappointed but also honoured when he was finally ordained
after a slightly longer period of training than normal. His memory is
not the best and he had a few problems remembering all of the battle
chants that Clanggedin priests learn. Since his training he has
forgotten several of these so his stirring chants tend to be slightly
repetitive though effective. He has returned home several times but

accident on a mountain slope and unable to climb out, the steps he
was climbing gave way in a mud slide and he was then unable to climb
up the steep slippery slope that remained. Surprisingly his mining
family accept this and though he was adept at a miner thought he
might fare better when he suggested traveling into Cantabria. However
with the plague and the distrust of nonhumans he found his way to

Started
