Usually only Dwarves will become clerics of Mahal (and females only very rarely). Mahal made the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves at the beginning of time, long, long ages ago and watches over them whenever they sleep beneath the earth.
For this reason nearly all Dwarves are worshippers of the god, though the Church itself is not very prominent in Dwarvish society. Most Dwarves dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to their allotted tasks: this is regarded as proper worship in it's own right. Thus the Church and it's clerics are left to go about their duties, alrgely uninterrupted by the laity. While ordinary Dwarves' devotion is expressed through their everyday work, clerics of the Church of Mahal spend their lives healing and defending the faithful from traditional enemies of the Dwarves, such as goblins, giants and greed.
Dwarves prefer not to discuss their god's presence within the elvish pantheon of the Valar (where his name is Aule).
